Bata Pasko is launched in Pagasinan!

One of World Sisters United directors, Vangie, came up with a brilliant idea that we got to pilot this Christmas. Its called Bata Pasko, it means "children's Christmas" in Tagalog. Vangie wanted to do something to help out poor and homeless kids in her Pangasinan region of the Philippines and give them something special for Christmas. So she, along with Raine (another director for WSU), each canvassed the area for donations for food and clothes. And my mother was kind enought to donate $216 for gifts for the kids. The even was held in two locations. Malasaqui and Pangasinan. Each party had 30 kids and it went over specatularly. The kids were given new clothes to wear for the occassion and then fed. Hard times VS blog times

For the last few months I have been too preoccupied by my own financial survival to actually blog. Since my last blog the entire global financial community has collapsed and has subsequently been propped up by governments who are struggling to keep economies rolling along. I myself have been experiencing serious financial hardships as a result of many factors. When I started the nonprofit, World Sisters United, I had planned on raising the startup capitol from my home equity line of credit and then selling my house which at the time had an all time high value and had plenty of equity in it for me to recoup the money I was spending on this organization and buy another house. I also had planned on getting the 501c3 status sooner and was planning on contributions and grants to pick up the operational costs for WSU. As well I planned on doing a massive ebay sales drive to raise additional money for building up this organization. But as I was compiling a huge debt of over a hundred twenty thousand dollars while building up the infrastructure of this non-profit I had no idea the housing market would collapse and the financial market would collapse. So now I’m in an extremely difficult situation. Along with all these hardships the county property taxes have risen and have added an additional two hundred dollars to my mortgage. So now with maxxed out credit cards and a second loan on my house of a hundred twenty grand, my monthly expenses are well beyond what I make. I learned fast that ebay and craigslist sales will not pick up the difference since nobody is buying right now and I am now left being three months behind on my mortgage and two months behind on every other bill I have. I may actually end up loosing my house as a result of all this.

I’m not entirely distraught about this situation because I figure I am right in there with one out of ten americans so I figure that I will have plenty of company if I loose my house. I won't be homeless because I also have a house in India and can always move there but I really don’t want to give up a residence in the US so I’m not just going to relinquish my house here without a fight. My strategy is going to be to rent out my bedrooms and move into my still unfinished downstairs. (I live in a fixer upper that is only half fixed up). One caveat concerning renting out in my house is that for whatever fated reason my plumbing in the main bathroom is out of commission presently so I cannot rent until I get that fixed and I don’t have the funds to fix it! So these are challenging times for all of us in our own ways. For me I have never before this time experienced a period where I actually go to sleep hungry. There is an interesting irony at my being in daily contact with poor people in the Philippines where all we can chat about is how neither of us have food to eat (yet we have internet connectivity). I do try to stock up on potatoes, rice and dal so I have some basic staple foods and my cat always gets priority. So many nights now in the last couple of months I have gone to sleep with empty belly while my cat purrs away with a happy belly. Why do we often treat animals better than humans?

Blogging for Typhoon Frank Victim

Above is an image from Wikipedia of the pathway that traces Typhoon Frank. You can see where it first hit land which is the Island of Samar. This is the island that our World Sisters United Director Lita Verdiflor is from. Her family house was entirely destroyed. We are seeking help to rebuild their Nipa Hut. Only 250 dollars is needed to completely rehouse this family. We are working hard to get pictures of the destroyed house we don't have access to cameras, and internet infrastructure is down. The family is presently staying with a kind neighbor. But can only do this for so long. We are desparately seeking donations to help this cause. Please check our other blogs to see how micro-giving can really help a person out in a tremendous way. We have raised over a thousand dollars through this site and 100% of the money (after paypal fees) has gone to the victim.

These typhoons and tropical storms in Asia barely hit the news here in the USA but they are huge events that displace hundreds of thousands of people. Frank made the news because of the tragic ferry that sank where over 700 were lost. As you can read below this Typhoon was on the scale of Katrina with its distruction and loss of lives.

Rusty gets MRI in Manila

Here is a shot of Rusty Eugenio as he enters the MRI lab at the De Los Santos Medical Center in Manila, Philippines. After getting the MRI he returns to Baguio where his doctor will plan the next stage which will be back surgery. Rusty injured his back in a job related accident and wasn't able to get medical attention because of no money. This was a year ago. Since loosing his job and his health things have gone down hill. Rusty cannot bend over and can't work at all now. He is in constant pain. When he did take some pain killers the medication combined with his depression over his situation messed with his mind and started to become aphasic. He has a wife and three children but they have had to move out because he behaves like he's mad all the time now.

The first doctor that looked at his case (see earlier blog on Rusty http://larriji.blogspot.com/2008/05/blogging-for-rusty.html) determined through the x-ray and exams that he had indeed broken his back and it healed off center. So Rusty will need back surgery. Fortunately Raine (Rusty's sister) found a hospital in Baguio that only charges for supplies and medicine, all the doctors are free. So the back surgery will not be so expensive. So the results of this MRI will allow the surgeons to know how to proceed. We are seeking assistance from anyone who can donate even a dollar to help with the medical and travel expenses for Rusty. As well there will be physical therapy costs after the operation. Baby Christian is three months old, born to WSU director Ate Joana, who is struggling to feed her two children without any support from a husband or boyfriend. Joanna is a cybersex worker who is wishing to leave that life behind. But with no education and no money even for food she is stuck in a difficult situation. She lives on the dirt floor of a shack in a Manila squatters village with her two children who have chronic health problems. The difficulties become compound with the lack of proper nutrition, wet conditions, rats, mold, added to all the fevers and diseases that her children get exposed to. The difficulties of a single mom raising kids in such poverty is unimaginable for those of us who living in the US. For the last two years I have been visiting the Philippines and know this squatters village that Joanna lives at. It's basically a swamp where people have built shacks out of scrap materials. The tropical storms typically tear off the roofs and flood their dwellings and you can imagine the mosquitoes that swarm the marshes that surround the village.

The cliche "when you're down, you're down" is confirmed here in this Manila ghetto. But still as you can see the picture above that this beautiful young women and her beautiful baby has a great deal of happiness and hope that their situation will improve. World Sisters United is working with Ate Joana and trying to help her finish her education and to purchase for her a small farm. So far we have purchased four small farms and built 12 sari sari stores to help other single mothers like Ate Joana. We are seeking people who would be interested in sponsoring her by contributing only five dollars a month. Joana's monthly needs are around us$250 a month. So it doesn't take that many people to supply her needed budget. And what will Ate Joana do while she is being supported by you and forty-nine other kind souls? She will finish her school so she can get a job.

Getting a job in the Philippines is not easy. Firstly, the employees require background checks and health reports that cost about 80 dollars. Secondly, they require a high school diploma for entry level retail jobs and college degrees for any decent paying job with good advancement possibilities. So we will be trying to assist Ate Joana get somewhere in her life against all odds. Most young women in her situation end up as bar girls prostituting to sex-tourists from the US, Europe, Japan and China. Ate Joana deserves better. Please help her out. Helping her out is helping baby Christian out. Every child we help out with their nutrition will help lift us all up. Proper nutrition at that critical infant stage insures proper brain development. Thus, helping out this baby with early nutrition will possibly give us that next great genius who creates that next great invention that helps us solve one piece of our sustainability problems.

Update on Glen

This is the most recent picture of Glen eating dinner. Its clear to see that his stomach has swollen up again to an alarming level. The saga of Glen has been very difficult because the doctors have not come to any conclusion as how to proceed further with his case. We raised thousands of dollars to get elaborate tests done in the finest medical facilities in Manila. But after the MRI, CT Scan and Angiogram tests the doctors on his case simply could not come to any conclusion. So the current status of Glen has not really changed in over a year now. His organs have failed him and his body does not process toxins so they build up and after a couple of weeks he needs to have the toxic fluids drained. His girl friend, Anna Salas, has been aggressively seeking government services and that has helped but the costs still run around US$120 each time Glen needs to be drained. And along with those costs there is medication costs that can be really expensive. So we are seeking funds to help Glen once again with medication costs and paying for his draining costs. As well if there are any medical specialists out there that can give some advice on this case it is much appreciated.

Pictured here is Lola Gloria from Malasiqui, Philippines. I met Lola Gloria for the first time in 2006 and then again last year in 2007. She is a lovely person who is very spirited and kind. Below is a letter from her granddaughter Waynie telling us how her Lola (grandmother in tagalog) is having mental problems and desperately needs medicine. The family has sold all their farm animals and is spiraling deeper into debt trying to pay for the help their dear Lola needs. We are asking for your support to help us with medicine she dearly needs. We will be getting notes from her doctor to understand more about her mental disorder. Pictured here is a restaurant in Angeles City that has been dubbed ATE EATS! It is owned and run by Bunso Maria, World Sisters United Director for Magalong Chapter near Angeles. Maria and her family served up an amazing feast while I was there in 2007. I learned that Maria's dad had been a chef in a 5-star hotel in Manila years before. So it made sense for Maria and her family to go into the restaurant business. Maria scouted out a place and I loaned about a thousand US dollars for her to get it started. Maria dubbed the name ATE EATS. It will be what they call "fastfood", but will still be home cooked Filipino, American and Chinese food. If this is successful Maria will be standardizing the menu and we will be franchising this operation to provide jobs for other WSU members there in the Philippines. This is an exciting business adventure - wish us luck!

Glen gets coronary angiogram in Manila!

Here is the entrance to the Philippine Heart Center in Manila. The reknowned facility where Glen went to get his coronary angiogram. We would like to thank all those people that helped to get Glen his coronary angiogram. A special thanks to my fellow coworkers in the engineering department of Digidesign who pitched in to help make this happen. This was an effort that came from both the east and west. It seemed an impossible task to achieve but we did it. Ate Anna, Glen's girlfriend was heroic in raising money from many people in the Philippines.

The Philippine Heart Center is so well known it is a destination for medical tourism, a trend that is on the rise lately because of exorbitant medical costs in the US and industrial countries without health care. One thing that has made Glen's situation much better is that Ate Anna has aggressively sought out all possible Philippine government agencies that provide medical assistance. Phil Health and PSCO. She has also taken this case to political officers and even the press in Manila. The total costs for the angiogram ended up as 60K peso. (around us$1500)

The saga of Glen is pretty amazing. He has spent the last year with a failing liver and kidneys. He cannot expel the toxins in his body and these build up every couple of weeks where his stomach area swells up and he must have surgery to be drained. This whole thing is a painful process that has been going on and on with no end in sight. This angiogram was the next step in resolving this mystery as to how to resolve his medical condition. So far the doctors know that the problem with Glen is his heart is failing and that is causing other organs to fail. The doctors are still trying to understand what to do. I will be posting notes from various doctors on this case as I recieve them. This case is complex and unfortunately the angiogram conclusion is being debated by the various doctors. Some feel an operation will help others disagree.

Blogging for Rusty

Pictured here is Rusty Eugenio at the hospital in Baguio, Philippines getting an x-ray. About a year ago he was at work on a construction job and he hurt his back. He stayed at home the next day and within two days he was bent over horribly and intense pain. He has been completely debilitated by his back injury. This story only gets sadder when you find out Rusty has three small children and is now begging on the streets in severe pain trying desperately to raise money to feed his kids and young wife. When I saw him in 2006 he was in perfect health and was a strong young man full of life. The last time I saw him in he was bent in such a way that I could not believe. You could see clearly how bent his back was and it was obvious that his muscles were contorted by his herniated disc.

Pictured here above is the actual x-rays of Rusty. I'm personally a big fan of chiropractors but as the note below says there is a fracture that is causing this problem here.

Pictured here in these shots below is Rusty standing and showing how bent his back is. After seeing doctors in Baguio the conclusion was that Rusty needs an MRI and most likely an operation. We are trying to raise 14k peso (around us$300) for an MRI. Fortunately Bunso Raine (Rusty's brother) found a government run hospital where there is no fee for doctors only medicine and a fee for the room. But tests like MRI's cost money still cost money.

Lola Veronica, 89 years old, passed away leaving behind a great family who loved her dearly. She is missed already and will be missed. When I met Lola Veronica in 2006 she was very spirited and very animated. She was the only one in the village of Malasiqui that really knew the traditional old Pangasinan folk songs from that region. I was fortunate enough to hear her sing. Such a lovely voice and what a lovely soul was Lola Veronica. A Lola well loved by all.

Ate Anna reports on Glen from Manila

So after the near miraculous fund raising that funded the thousand dollar coronary angiogram the resulting news of the tests are sobering. As Ate Anna reports here in her emails from Manila the problem with Glen's heart is clear to the doctors now and the report shows that he needs a heart operation that is estimated at 500K peso. Ate Anna has told me that the PhilHealth and some other Gov funded help will bring down the price considerably but it's still an enormous amount and it's still a risky operation. So Ate Anna will be returning with Glen back to Angeles to rest after the big ordeal. We will have to return to drawing board here with our fundraising. The important thing is we know what is wrong now and we can move forward with getting the operation that Glen needs to survive. Here are the latest emails from Ate Anna about Glen:

Baby Ashley needs formula ASAP

This baby desperately needs baby formula. She won't take breast milk and whenever her mother has no money she feeds her water or sugar water. We are trying to raise any money we can to help supply this baby with formula. Formula costs about US$25 for a week. It's very difficult for someone living on a poverty level to come up with such an amount. Bunso Jhen was telling me her budget yesterday cause I was curious why she couldn't afford formula and when she told me all the numbers it was clear that baby formula was not possible. As she was telling me I could see the baby was crying non-stop in the background because she was hungry. Please give whatever you can to help this baby recieve proper nutrition.

Bunso Jessa's house is falling apart

Pictured here is the entrance to the home of World Sisters United Director Jessa Briones who lives in a typical squatters village in Metro Manila. This house is put together with scrap parts and found objects. During the last big typhoon in 2006 it took a big hit and the roof of this house blew away. We are trying to raise the money to rebuild this house by putting in a concrete floor, cinder block walls and tin roof. The severity of this problem is beyond comprehension. What my aim here with World Sisters United is to raise up the lifestyle of a handful of our Directors all around the Philippines to where they can focus on other aspects of their life such as finishing their education and realizing their potential. I chose the various WSU members because they showed leadership qualities, sharp minds and have good hearts. After we get our Directors established on more firm ground in the material world they can then help to barn-raise other peoples houses and small businesses all funded by microgiving dollars from donors like you. All the time we will be creating micro-documentaries to show the progress we make and the lives being impacted and your dollars put to good purpose.

The really hard thing to imagine is that 13 people live in this house. From my estimates it's about 120 sq feet. I asked Bunso Jessa how can so many live here and she said they live "like sardines". Unfortunately we can't expand the footprint but we can certainly make it a dwelling that doesn't take in water. When I was there in Nov 2007 I noticed that water would run through the floor because there wasn't a proper floor, or proper walls to prevent this. This house basically takes in any water over flow from the close-by swamp. This swamp is an accumulation of sewage and run off water from the surrounding Metro Manila area.

Pictured here is one Bunso Jessa's little sister playing in this mold infested house where she lives. For just US$1500 we can rebuild this house and make it solid and mold free. Last year I gave the money for this family to build and stock a small eatery that provides a great deal of their needed income. If families like this don't have some kind of income their daughters like the one pictured will opt to sacrifice themselves and join in the ranks of the sex industry. This will pretty much sew up their fate and they rarely can rise above such a life. They never complete their education and they usually have very short miserable lives as sex workers in the slums of Manila.
In this picture you can clearly see black mold that is a major feature on the interior walls. As most of you know this causes tremendous health problems. With the new house we build here we can alleviate the black mold problem. (Note the previous blog where Jessa's mom has chronic blackouts and needs a CAT Scan.) We are asking for any donation, small or large to build out this house and make it a proper concrete house with tin roof. We will be posting progress on the construction of this house. Pictured here is Bunso Jessa's mom. Bunso Jessa is a World Sisters United Director living in a squatters village in Manila, Philippines. Her mom has been having blackouts for over a year now and has been advised by the doctors to get a cat scan to find out what is causing the blackouts. This woman has an important role to play as she has eleven children to take care of. She is an amazingly friendly and kind person. I meet her whenever I go to the Philippines for production workshops and our World Sisters United nomadic summits where we go to each of our 8 chapters and teach how to make documentary films and learn ways to better our lives. So please send a dollar now to help us fund a cat scan for this great soul who deserves to see her family grow up. We are also trying to help build out this families house, which is the most pathetic house I have seen where 13 people live. Please help us now. The cat scan costs 6000 peso. (US$140). Blogging for Bunso Lita's CR in Samar

It's hard to really see what this is especially if you live in an industrialized nation that is materially endowed. In the Philippines this is called a "CR" or comfort room. But we would know it as a bathroom. This particular bathroom is at the home of one of World Sisters United Directors Bunso Lita, who lives on the island of Samar. For those familiar with the USA's history of intertwining with the Philippines you will remember the important role the island of Samar played. This is the island where the USA lost a key battle when we were at war with the Philippines. (This is something our history books seem to over look.) Also the place Leyte is near Samar. Leyte is where Gen Douglas MacArthur made his famous return there on the shores of the beach where that famous photo was taken. The people of Samar are descended from a spirited and independent meltdown of several tribes that were mostly fishermen. Today Samar is off the main beaten path for tourism but does draw an occasional surfer or naturalist interested in the lovely waterfalls and tropical foliage. The main problem with Samar today is simply there is little money making opportunities and therefore it has a very low standard of living (by western standards). This CR pictured here is the bathroom for a large extended family. The one bucket serves as a toilets and the other holds your shower water. We are trying to raise up the standard of living for our World Sisters United Directors. So we seek 5000 peso (US$120) to renovate this bathroom and put in some proper fixtures. Glen back in hospital for another draining

Pictured here is Glen back in the hospital again. For those of you that have been following this story you have seen the plight of Glen, a 30 yr old in Angeles City, Philippines, who has been struggling with his liver and kidneys failing. The doctors in Manila said that the cause is his heart. But there is not the funds to go to the next step of conducting an angiogram to determine what is wrong with his heart. Each draining has been costing upwards to US$150 and these drainings are necessarry every two weeks. So the situation is bankrupting and already poor family. Glen's girl friend, Ate Anna, has gotten PHILHEALTH now so that will reduce some of the hospital bills by 50%. So the situation has improved greatly with that. The angiogram will cost US$1000. And even that will only determine the needed heart operation. So the situation is grave. We need your help now.

Pictured here is Glen with his son. Glen's will to live is very strong, as you can imagine, motivated by the desire to be there for is son. We have received almost US$400 for Glen's cause which has probably saved his life as his condition becomes dire when the toxins build up in his body. World Sisters United is made up of many young mothers and 8 infants at this time! Baby CJ (pictured here) is son of WSU director Raine of Pangasinan. CJ's father works but only makes 2 dollars a day in his construction job. So this is not a case of dead-beat dad not doing the right thing. This baby needs money for formula. Her mother has resorted to feeding her powdered milk or sugar water. This is what happens when mothers in the third world have babies who won't breast feed and they don't have money for formula. It stunts growth and really does lesson the potential for the child as they don't get the needed nutrients. I was quite shocked to see how many babies dont breast feed in the Philippines. They don't accept the practice of wet nurses and what happens is the babies just go with very little nutritional food input until they can take solid food. This is really a sad situation. Lola Veronica desperately needs your help...

Our World Sisters United Director in Malasqui, Vangie, featured in the blog just before this, has also been suffering the painful deterioration of her grandmother Lola Veronica. Pictured here is some very difficult photos to look at. This is Lola Veronica, who was featured in some earlier blogs here on this site. She has deteriorated quite a bit. She was diagnosed with throat cancer but doesn't have the money for treatment. Living in the Philippines is rough if you have no money. There is no health care or general hospitals people can go to. We have tried to raise $250 dollars for the next level of treatment that could possibly fight the cancer but it seems that it is too late at this point. She does not eat much now.
Shown here is Vangie comforting her grandmother. Vangie asked me a couple of days ago for money to buy adult diapers. She said that at this point all that can be done is to give her diapers to help her stay in some comfort. As well the medicine seems to help a great deal to give her an appetite. So we are begging all of you out there to help Lola Veronica out in her last days.
Vangie will need to keep these diapers in stock and to purchase more medicine. The cost for a week of diapers is about 10 dollars. The medicine cost is about twice that for a week. Please send whatever you can. Just a dollar or two donation will do an amazing service to help this kind elderly lady living in a nipa hut in Malasqui who is just trying to be as comfortable as she can in her last days.

Ampalaya crop is under progress

Pictured here is World Sisters United Director Vangie who is standing in the first WSU rice field's first harvest. This 2.5 hectacre farm in Malasqui Philippines is now being transformed into an ampalaya field. This has been an exciting and successful adventure as we can practically feed a small village with this single small farm. We rotate crops from rice to corn to ampalaya. (check out my previous blog: http://larriji.blogspot.com/2008/02/small-short-term-loan-sought-for-bunso.html) We have struggled to raise the money to build up the ampalaya vine frames and to buy the seeds. I was able to sell a piece of video gear to help get the farm set up. Pictured below is preparations for the ground. We rented the tractor that is mixing and breaking the soil up.

Pictured here below is the bamboo poles I paid 11,500 peso for. These we can reuse from season to season for at least 3 years. So this is a depreciable capitol expense that saves us a bit over the next few seasons.
Pictured below is the Vangie's father managing the setup of the bamboo into frames for the Ampalaya vine.

Pictured here below is where you can see the use of blue string being tied up to allow the vine to grow on it. The cost of labor 5000 peso (us$120).

The cost of the blue string to cover this 2.5 hectacres was 2000 peso (us$50). The really shocking cost was the seeds that set me back $14,000 peso (us$ 340)

So the next picture shows how amazing mother nature is. The warm air, hot sun and pumped in well water has produced an amazing vine in a very short time.

The total yeild for this crop is estimated to yeild 49K peso. (Which is about us$1179) This amount is enough to provide 50% of the income for this very large extended family of Vangie's seen below living in this small nipa compound near Pangasinan.

Blogging for Bunso Andrea Beccone

World Sisters United has not been doing so great lately, our members have been hit hard with grave financial and medical difficulties. The economic slump we are seeing in the US has hit hard in the Philippines and all my money has run out. WSU is currently struggling to survive on an operational budget of zero. All we have is a few cameras left un-pawned and the Internet to tell our stories. My own financial difficulties are compounded by the fact that I spent more than US$100,000 on WSU in the last three years charging up my home equity line of credit to it's max. So now I have an additional second mortgage to pay. So all that bad news aside I have to share some really great news. Andrea Beccone just graduated from her class with three honors! Bunso Andrea represents a new generation of hope. When I met her last year she was studying hard. Every now and then you meet someone you realize can do anything they set their heart on and it's rare to see that in a child. But I will bet my house that this girl does great things if she keeps at her studies like she is now.

Education is simply key for the progression of humanity and for that matter for the progression of consciousness. But unfortunately education is not free in the Philippines. I was shocked when I found this out. The Philippines has tremendous potential because the people have a great deal of natural talents and work well together. From what I have seen the schools are really good in the Philippines. But the Philippines needs to make free education it's number one priority if it wants to compete with the rest of Asia in this digital information economy. Kids need access to computers and access to online libraries. They need access to the best teachers and they need parents that provide the atmosphere conducive to learning. Andrea's parents are struggling hard to do the right thing. They deserve a big salute! Fortunately when I asked various WSU members about this lack of free schools in the Philippines they say it is a hot topic and the government is well aware of the problem. Lets hope there is quick progress towards free k through 12 education coming soon to the Philippines.

When Ate Anna ask me to give money so that Andrea could buy a graduation gown, I really didn't see the importance of it. I saw so many here in the blog who were struggling to live and some with hungry babies and others struggling to pay for food so it seemed superficial to spend money on a graduation gown. But when I saw this picture of Bunso Andrea I could see the value in her eyes. And felt such hope for the youth all around the world. This girl lives in a shack about the size of one of those sears and roebucks lawn sheds you put your riding lawn mower in. Her family struggle hard to cover the food, medical costs and to pay for her education. As written below in Ate Anna's email the family could not afford to even pay for a celebration dinner at the fast food chain Jollibees. That would cost a about 10 dollars there in the Philippines. So in this blog for Andrea Beccone I ask you all to give just a dollar to pitch in to buy a celebration dinner out to Jollibees. I will post pictures when the dinner takes place. Glen back in the hospital - Donor pays part of his bill!

Glen is back in the hospital getting drained again. But miracles do happen, someone came through and has paid for the bill enough so he can go home! What you are seeing here is an empty sari sari shop owned by World Sisters United and run by bunso Jean. Seeing it in this state makes me want to cry. A good sari sari shop in the Philippines can be like a central nervous system of a small town or village. Lots of people hanging out, eat, drinking, laughing and having good company. This particular shop I paid to have built about a year ago. It cost about $1100us for this shop built in a squatters village in Manila. As you can see this shop is now empty and lifeless. I have bought stock for this shop three or four times now, I can't actually remember how many times. We can't keep the shop in stock cause the mother of Bunso Jean is so kind she simply gives the stock away to all her neighbors who are also her relatives. So the shop is now empty again and I'm completely broke. We are seeking some kind soul out there that can help us out with a donation to restock and try to jump start a small family with the business that put food on the table. We are working on a new approach with rules such as "no free food". Hopefully that will help keep a basic flow of stock going. We have seen this location very active and profitable. Bunso Lita was one of the first World Sisters United recruits that I made. She hails from the Island of Samar in the Philippines. Lita was raised in a family of fishermen working the waters around Samar Island using a traditonal outrigger boat. Her father passed away a couple of years ago after a years of poor health. This led to hard times for Lita and her family. I paid for a Sari Sari shop for Lita's family and that has helped provide them with a steady income but it's not enough. Lita's older brother (pictured below by the boat) has been trying to raise the money to buy another boat after loosing the first one to hard times. So we are trying to raise the money here for a new boat. They found this boat (below) for sale for 10k php (US$245.70 @ 2/11/08 exchange rate). Bunso Jessa's family needs a house

Bunso Jessa is one of World Sisters United up and coming Directors. She lives in a squatters village in Manila. One that was hit very hard by the big typhoon a year ago where many lost their houses or roofs. This squatters village is very near and dear to my heart. We have three WSU directors from there and whenever I visit this place I get nothing but amazing hospitality and great times from the people living there. The picture above shows the WSU crew with tripods and camera cases all walking into this squatters incampment. Bunso Jessa is looking back waiting for me, because the cat walk you see goes on for half the length of a football field and I usually have near-death experiences when I traverse it because the boards are so rickety and the bog you have to walk over looks like it could easily contain toxic death waste water. Although I'm told it's just sewage run-off mixed with basic watershedding.

It's hard to believe this squatters village is in the middle of such a large urban area as Manila. When you get past the vast series of moats surrounding the village you could be on some removed island anywhere. Jessa's family lives in a house that is exremely small for ten people. I paid for them to build a small eatery that is next to their house. The eatery is typical construction for the Philippines, poured concrete floor, concrete cinder block walls and corrugated tin roof. The total cost of the construction for the small eatery (10' x 8') was us$750. But their house is in dire need of construction so we are trying to raise the funds to build one. Their current house is one very small room with a small sleeping space you climb up in to. The wall pictured below (behind where the family stands) is the only legitimate wall of the makeshift building and it's actually just the wall of the neighboring house. The rest of the house is just cobbled together with scrap material and bamboo. It has dirt floors and water runs through the floor when it rains. (which it does a lot in Manila). The last typhoon completely ripped off the roof leaving the family without housing for some time. (the eatery wasn't yet finished)

Bunso Jessa got her uncle and father to put together a list of the costs for building out their house to give it a proper floor, walls and roof. The total with labor and all came to us$1500. SEEKING $1260 short term loan for small farming business in Malasqui, Philippines.

Shown here is an estimate and spreadsheet on costs for a loan we are seeking for Bunso Vangie. This loan is needed only for 9 months. Its a loan of 51K PHP (US$1260) to prepare the present corn field for an ampalaya crop. Pictured at the top here to the left is a picture of an ampalaya vine. As you can see its a raised trellis that holds the vine. It's very expensive to prepare the field and it's 2.5 hectacre so it's very large.

The cool thing about all this is that after you loan this family the money for this small business, you get your money back and the family is left with half of their entire budgetary needs for 2008. So it's a great help for Bunso Vangie and her large extended family which numbers over 30 people.

Four years ago I started to conceputalize of what could be done to help oppressed women in developing countries in the face of rapid globalization that was increasingly victimizing the innocent. The result was World Sisters United, an international media collective that allowed the point of view of impoverished and dispossessed women from all around the globe. WSU is providing media creation tools, training and facilities and exploring ways to use the media to help others. WSU has blossumed on its own now and it building its own momentum. But all my money is gone and so we are looking for people to help sponser some of our members still struggling for survival.

In 2005 I started recruiting members from all around the world but the Philippines took off first. I used the web to make all the initial contacts. I found the easiest place to find female victims of oppression to be the cybersex sweat shops. They were online and accessable to chat. This human-slave-trade derived industry would find young girls from small villages, ship them off to the cities, keep them in crowded apartments hovered in front of CRT computer monitors with as many as 5-8-12-16 crowded to a room. They would then pay them pennies a minute only to strip and perform sex acts to mostly men from developed countries who pay $2 a minute. These girls basically have to do anything the men ask them. They put up with constant verbal abuse for hours and hours. It turns good kind hardworking God fearing people into battered prostitutes. Cybersex industry is a billion dollar business that's growing at a rapid rate. 12% of the GNP of the Philippines is the sex industry. 14% of Thailand's GNP is from the sex industry. Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia all are following this trend. Right now as you read this there are countless millions of girls online working hard for their money. It's a sad waste of humanity. It's hard to believe the people profiting and supporting this industry can sleep at night.

Going to the site where I recruited at was extemely depressing seeing the sadness in the eyes of these innocent young girls, many underage, that were supporting large extended families. I couldn't really understand how people could find seeing these girls and seeing their condition erotic in any way. To me it only spoke of a certain slavery and oppression of good people. People worthy of helping out. These weren't drug addicts or hardened prostitutes for the most part. Most everyone I met sent all their money home. I couldnt help but wonder if there wasn't a way you could use a web portal like this to actually help others. So this is what spawned p2pgiving.com which will be launching within a the next month. This will allow profiles of people in need to be directly viewed by people who can give. With broadcasting of the status and updates the giver can actually be part of the story. So we no longer have to just witness dispair we can help to turn things around.

It took a lot of time and a lot of money to get to meet and know candidates for WSU and to sift through the variety of personalities and to find ones with good leadership qualities and strong character. It took about nine months, I was very happy when that phase was over and the core members of WSU that we ended with is amazing to say the least. I'm happy to say my intuition regarding the ones I recruited was spot on. About half of the members still have to work in the sex industry. So I am currently seeking people to help sponser them so they can leave behind these dreadful jobs where they are treated purely like objects and end up with battered self esteems.

The very first girl I recruited in the online cybersex industry was Maryann. She was always crying or sleeping or looking depressed in her cybersex job. She was understandably depressed all the time. Her work was hours of men treating her poorly and asking her to do disgusting things. Maryann didn't see any of the money she made through the sex work. Most of her earnings went to her boss and the rest went to her family. Maryann comes from a remote province of Biliran where her family lives in a nipa hut with no water or electricity. I asked Maryann how much would it cost to leave behind her cybersex work and she replied $50 a month. I put her on salary and then started to help her build a small business.

It's been an uphill battle since then but things are improving in her life in general. She met a scallywag type of guy who got her pregnant nine months ago. She had the baby then if you read some earlier blogs you can see that after a sligtly premature cesarian birth and complications with her baby she was left with a huge hospital bill. One hospital actually kept the baby as collateral! So Maryan's mother had some land that was in the family for years that she sold to pay the hospital bills. Maryann had to sell the sari shop I helped her start. She managed to get some pigs in exchange and now they have been sold. So we are seeking donors or sponsers on behalf of Maryann. Any amount will help. 100% of the proceeds go directly to Maryann to help her survive and feed her newborn. Maryan has no support from anybody. The father of her baby has ran off and disappeared. I can personally vouch for this young woman. She has great heart and goes to her local church every day to pray. This is a person who derserves a chance and any help will certainly make a significant difference in her life.

Lola Veronica's nipa hut

Pictured is Lola Veronica's nipa hut in Pangasinan, Philippines. This is a typical type of hut that you see extremely poor people living in. It's raised to prevent flooding from heavy monsoon rains and typhoons. It's built of materials from the immediate area. Even though it looks like a small barn out building it's actually Lola Veronica's home. The kitchen, pictured below, is mostly outside. This nipa is in a cluster of huts that a large extended family lives in. The area around them is beautiful rice and ampalaya fields. The area is 10 miles from Malasqui which is 45 minutes from Pangasinan city.

Lola Veronica is in desperate need of $250 for a throat operation. She has throat cancer. She is 89 years old and would love to be able to just live in her nipa hut for a few more years to enjoy her family. Pictured below is Lola Veronica two years ago with her great grand children. I met Lola in 2006 during the WSU summit in the Philippines. WSU is organizing to find people like Lola Veronica who need a little help. We are creating a peer-to-peer charity web portal to accomidate this function. Please help in any way you can. This last week has been rough for Ate Anna and Glen. I've been getting many text messages of Ate Anna pleading for help. All my money is gone, WSU is broke for the time being. But the needs don't stop. Glen even contemplates suicide because things are so difficult and there is no relief in site. He has gone through a year of this agonizing sickness that keeps him in bed with no energy, sleepless nights, no appetite and severe depression. His liver and kidneys have failed, his skin tone and eyes are yellow because of the toxins in his body. He is slowly dieing a miserable death. All the doctors can do is to drain the toxic buildups by jabbing a hole in his stomach and draining the fluids.

Bunso Maryan is Director of the Biliran chapter of World Sisters United. She is a single mom who lives in a nipa hut with no electricity or running water. She lives with her parents in a very traditional life in a very remote island region of the Philippines. Her father is too old to work and she has been the breadwinner in her family since she was 14. I recruited her two years ago for WSU and have helped her leave her sweatshop job in cyber sex. Maryan just gave birth to a slightly premature baby with health difficulties. She just got stuck with a medical bill where the hospital won't give her baby back until she pays the bill! I was astounded when I heard that. This sounds like kidnapping to me but apparently its common practice there. In the Philippines when you can't pay your bill you can't leave the hospital. We saw that in the earlier blog about Glen. But to keep a newborn infant from its mother somehow pushes beyond the boundaries of civil. So there you have it, hospitals holding babies as collateral for the hospital bill. SEEKING US$120 to pay the deposit on this man's immediate medical bills:

We are desperately asking for some money to help Glen. I'm getting frequent text messages and emails from Ate Anna now for 5K peso (US$120) for a deposit for the next draining of toxic fluids for Glen. His breathing was apparently so irregular that he had to go back into the hospital to go on life support. This is a very bad turn of events. Even though the draining is keeping him alive it is ultimately not progress because its just treating the symptom and not fixing the root problem. This is the conundrum we are facing. What Glen really needs is a coronary angiogram (costs US$1000) to narrow down the specific issue causing his liver and kidneys to fail. Then this test should tell the doctors what is wrong with his heart so they can operate (costs unknown). Specialists in the Manila heart clinic that examined Glen ran enough tests to see that the root problem is in his heart but he needs the angiogram before he can be operated on. But the bottom line is none of this can happen without assistance from our friends. Glen comes from a poor family and there is no money at all. Baby Rhiann Nicole was born on December 14 of 2007 to WSU member Maryann Asis, Director of our Biliran chapter. She was born premature and has a congenital heart problem. The baby is seen here in an incubator where she still must stay. But the doctors say that the premature baby needs to go to a better hospital in Tacloban some hours drive from Naval, Biliran where the baby now resides there at the public hospital. We are asking our freinds out there to please help baby Rhiann Nicole. Her mother, Maryann, is a single mother (the father abandoned the mother and baby) and she lives in a nipa hut on a squatters village on the Island of Biliran. There is no money in the family and no support to be found so far. Since all the WSU funds and my own funds are depleted we need extra help. Please contact me here if you can help. Baby CJ is one month and one week old. He is born to Bunso Raine and her new husband Ian. I was Godfather of their wedding in Nov 2007. Raine is one of our amazing Directors in WSU in Philippines. She is Director of the Pangasinan chapter and also first manager of KIRL (Kuya International Rice Lending). This rice lending business is an amazing idea thought of by Raine's dad. Loaning rice to those who just need a bag of rice to feed their families for a month while some work is pending. Its helping to save families from a certain starvation. Unfortunately I only had a few hundred dollars to front capital for the initial rice and we have since run out of rice to loan. Raine also has a sari shop but is struggling for keeping stock. The father of CJ, Ian, has just started a construction job, but entry level construction in the Philippines pays very little. So this young couple is having a difficult time just keeping the baby in formula, diapers and vitamins.

Just the year before in Oct 2006 Lola Veronica had sang some old Pangasinan folk songs only she could remember. We are desperately trying to raise 12K peso (around $250US) for her to get an operation on her throat.

Pictured above is Lola Veronica at the WSU sari sari shop in Malasqui. I first met Lola Veronica in 2006 at her home in the Pangasinan province on the island of Luzon. She is the great aunt of Vangie, WSU Director of Malasqui chapter. Lola Veronica is now in the hospital in Pangasinan with throat cancer. She is struggling a great deal suffering a great deal and the doctors give her a 50-50 chance to live. We are trying to raise 12K(about $250US) peso to pay for a throat operation that might save her.

Letter from Glen

This letter was hand delivered to me in Manila by the kind hand of Ate Anna just before Glen went to the heart center at Makati in Metro Manila. There he underwent many tests to determine his problem. This heart center is the best in the Philippines so it was top notch service and expertise. Before this the doctors in Angeles City were just draining him and only treating the symptoms of his kidney failure. Those doctors had no other information to give Glen, only that his kidneys were failing and that he needed further tests. Here is his letter to me from Dec 3, 2007:

Brother Larry,
It's me Glen, what's up! Im glad you meet Anna and I meet u to thank you for helping me. Bec I really need help right now in my case. The day after tom we proceed at heart center in Makati to do chek up. I hope bro! Larry U can help me again the truth my family is poor they don't have money to support my case. They do anything to help me. Right now only Anna my love to help me. I really thankfull God that Anna is beside me. She do more I know. She sacrafice all this. She really kind and like U a big heart for those needs help. Bro Larry hope (you) help again. I wont have long life. I hope (people) in ur place see my case and help me thru you. Now if Glen can ever find the money to get released from this hospital he will go to his parents town. Ate Ann thinks he can find a hospital that will drain him for free. The next stage is to raise a thousand US dollars to get him a coronary angiogram. This will hopefully tell what is exactly wrong with his heart that caused the chain reaction where his organs are failing.

In the Philippines they don't release you from a hospital unless you pay your bill. So they just hold you there and charge you for keeping you so your bill keeps going up. Poor people in the Philippines have it rough when it comes to health care. A great deal of the money I've spent on WSU in the Philippines is on health care for the members.

Just like you and me. Glen is a really nice guy who was perfectly healthy up till a year ago. He first got a fever and then it stayed with him a long time. He developed sleeping disorders and constant diarrhea. Things never got better. His kidneys failed him. He couldn't breath. He started turning yellow. His stomach started bloating. He was suffering tremendously and unable to eat or sleep. His stomach swelled so much that he had to get it drained. His toxins weren't being processed by his normal body organs. So now he has to get drained once every two weeks to 40 days. This has been going on for a year now.

I have paid about a thousand dollars helping Glen get drained and for medicine and hospital bills. Ive run out of money. So if anyone out there has any they can spare we have started a Glen Fund. please send whatever you can - every little bit helps.

In the Philippines WSU has seven chapters; Manila, Angeles City, Bayawan, Biliran, Tacloban, Pangasinan, and Malasqui. We are training 12 amazing young women to be Directors and Producers of documentary videos and TV shows. We mostly communicate through YM and text messaging. Even though the girls keep selling their cellphones and losing them we somehow manage to keep in touch.

New Years Eve Ate Ann sent me a plea for helping Glen. Here is her email to me and the shots she took of Glen struggling to hold on to life:

STILL NEED US$1000 to pay for coronary angiogram for Glen.
I started a non profit organization a couple years ago called World Sisters United. WSU is an international nonprofit collective seeking out ways to use the media to help others. This opens up a plethora of possibilities. One obvious direction we can look is free social networks and blogspots like this one. So I will begin to utilize this site as a utilitarian vehicle to help solve some of the immediate problems this young growing NGO faces with its various chapters around the world. This blog will begin to serve us as a bulletin to call out to you, our friends, to help us overcome these obstacles we face.

In the Philippines most all of our members are extremely poor. Half of them live in squatters villages and some of them live in very modest concrete cinder block houses or nipa huts. Half of the members still work in the cybersex industry. Half are single moms. The biggest problem that faces WSU members is medical issues. We have one immediate urgent need we are desperately asking for help with. We also can use assistance in finding free medical missions or clinics in the Philippines. If you have no information or funds then we ask your prayers and positive thoughts.

One of our senior members, Ate Ann, has been struggling for the last year with helping her boyfriend, Glen, through a very difficult illness. He is currently in the hospital in Angeles City getting his body drained of toxic fluids because his kidneys have failed. Ate Ann needs 15k pesos ($368US) to pay for this current stay in the hospital. All of the WSU funds are exhausted, all of Ate Ann's funds are exhausted and all of Glen's families funds are exhausted.
